Lenovo Vibe K4 Note hands on: Looks promising

Lenovo has finally taken the lid off the much talked about Vibe K4 Note in India. It is the successor to the hugely popular K3 Note phone. The phone has now been clubbed under the Vibe sub-brand and will retail on Amazon India starting January 19, 2016.

During the launch presentation the company was quick to point out that the phone does not offer mere specs bump over the K3 Note, but is a completely new phone from the ground up and has been made keeping in mind the multimedia enthusiasts.

Lenovo will be selling the phone standalone as well as have a bundled option that will include the ANT VR headset. As per the company, the ANT VR headset along with TheaterMax VR software will help users enjoy movies and videos like never before.

Here are our first impressions about the Lenovo Vibe K4 Note
Design

In terms of design, the Lenovo Vibe K4 Note does not bear any resemblance to the K3 Note. In fact, it looks more akin to the recently launched Vibe S1 with metallic sides and curved back. Thanks to the curved back, the Vibe K4 Note offers better grip. Nice matte finish at the back feels nice too.

In addition to that, the smartphone does not appear cheap in any way. It weighs a 158 grams and the slimmest edge is 3.8mm thick opposed to the thickest edge is 9.1mm.
Clearly, it is not the slimmest or the lightest phone out there, but feels neither too heavy nor too light. There are three touch sensitive buttons on the phone that are responsive.

Dolby Atmos speakers

The phones comes with twin-front facing Dolby Atmos speakers but we are yet to try the same and see how good they are in terms of audio output.

Display

As per the teasers, we were expecting that Lenovo K4 Note will come with a great display. The phone sports a 5.5-inch Full HD (1080p) display, which is the same as its predecessor. What’s different is the 1000:1 contrast ratio, 178 degree wide angle viewing at 450 Nits brightness, and user-controlled colour balance. The phone seems to be offer a decent display at this price point.

Internals

The Lenovo Vibe K4 Note packs in an Octa-core Mediatek MT6753 chipset that is clocked at 1.3GHz. It comes with 3GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage, which can be expanded by up to 128GB via microSD cards or USB OTG. In our brief time that we spend with the phone, we thought it was really smooth.

The phone comes with a 3,300mAh battery and a support for Quick charge. We are yet to see how this performs in the real life scenario

Software

The phone comes with Android 5.1 along with a layer of Vibe UI. The OS feels light and easy to navigate. Just like the Vibe P1, there are no apps on the home screen, you get an app drawer.

Lenovo has assured that it will be giving an update to Android 6.0 soon, but not given any fixed time line to it.

Camera

The Lenovo Vibe K4 Note comes with a 13MP rear camera and 5MP fixed-focus camera. The camera is fast to focus and manages to take some decent photos in indoor lights. But we shall be putting both the camera to good use and sharing the verdict of the same in our review.

Security

The Lenovo Vibe K4 Note comes with a fingerprint sensor and NFC. These are good additions in the phone and we will let you know of the performance of the same in the coming review.

Early verdict

Overall, the Lenovo Vibe K4 Note looks like a promising smartphone and a fitting successor to the K3 Note. There are two features that we are looking forward to try on this phone, which are the TheaterMax software and how is the experience of watching movies using the headset and the Dolby Atmos speakers.

ZTE Grand X 3 and Avid Plus are big phones with small prices

Huawei Mate 8 phablet is coming to the US and UK

The Huawei Mate 8 phablet was announced in China back in November, but there was no word on whether it would be coming to other markets - but now we know, and it's coming to the UK and US soon after the frim took to the stage at CES 2016.

The Mate 8 is a follow-up to Ascend Mate 7 that launched back at IFA 2014 and showed that Huawei is getting good at creating large screen smartphones.

The Huawei Mate 8 features a 6-inch 1080p display with 368ppi, a HiSilicon Kirin 950 chipset and the latest Android 6 Marshmallow software.
Big and better

There are three different versions of the Huawei Mate 8. You can get a 32GB version with 3GB of RAM and two SIM slots or there's a choice of this storage option with only one slot.

Then there's a 64GB version of the phone with 4GB of RAM and two SIM slots - but there's no word of the 128GB version that launched in China.

The camera is a particular highlight with a 16MP rear shooter and an 8MP front-facing selfie snapper. That's all powered by a 4000mAh battery and there's a fingerprint sensor on the back to keep all of your information secure.

Huawei hasn't revealed the exact release date or price for the phone yet but we'd expect it to hit both US and UK shores in the coming weeks.
