Huawei Mate 8 looks impressive, but you're in for a long wait

Huawei has released its new flagship phone in the form of the Mate 8 – and it comes with a 6-inch full HD screen and a fingerprint sensor on the back much like the Mate S.

Under the hood is Huawei's latest Kirin 950 SoC which includes an octa-core CPU made up of four A72 2.3GHz cores and four A53 1.8GHz cores.

Huawei is promising improved voice controls, roaming, navigation and payment capabilities, and a power-saving firewall on the Mate 8, while other reports point towards a supersized 4,000mAh battery. That should hopefully yield some impressive stamina results.
But there's a wait

Huawei is also including the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow software with a freshly redesigned Emotion UI 4.0 for the phone as well.

It's not clear what Huawei has done to its UI yet, but it's only good news for us – every phone we've seen running Emotion recently has been pretty heavily customised.

The phone itself is made of aluminium and is available in gold, silver, grey and brown

The Huawei Mate 8 launches in China today and will be coming to international markets right after an official unveiling at CES 2016 in January.

InFocus releases M808 smartphone with 5.2-inch FHD screen and 4G LTE for Rs 12,999

InFocus is not a stranger to the budget and mid-range mobile market in India. The company has just unearthed yet another mid-ranger for the highly competitive segment carrying a price tag of Rs 12,999. As with all the other InFocus phones we've seen in the country, this one too will be available exclusively via Snapdeal.

At first glance, it seems like the pricing might be a little too steep given the hardware on board, but InFocus clearly thinks otherwise.

There are no distinguishing features here to make it stand out from the competition, but the company will rely on its partnership with e-commerce retailer Snapdeal to reach a wide range of customers across the country. The smartphone will be available in Metallic Gold and Metallic Silver color variants.

Speaking on the launch, Sachin Thapar, Country Head, InFocus India, said, "The kind of overwhelming consumer response we received for our last flagship launch of M812 reaffirmed our belief that today's style conscious smartphone users are looking for a device which sets them apart from the crowd, with an aspiring design and stellar performance. Full metal design is undoubtedly the true benchmark for premium looks and with InFocus M808, we have yet again accomplished the best in the category design with a delightful performance."

Hardware specifications of the InFocus M808:

· 5.2-inch Full HD (1920x1080) display
· Octa-core 1.3 GHz Mediatek MT6753 processor
· 13MP rear camera
· 5MP front camera
· 2GB RAM
· 16GB internal storage (expandable via microSD)
· Android 5.1 Lollipop
· 2,450 mAh battery
· 4G LTE with dual SIM support

Lava Iris X10 available online for Rs 10,990

The Lava Iris X10 smartphone has just been released in India carrying a relatively steep price tag for a budget device. The handset is an exclusive via HomeShop18, which means you can't get it elsewhere.

It's quite appalling to spend Rs 11,000 for a device with no 1080p display, especially when you compare it with a bunch of sub Rs 10,000 smartphones that are available in the Indian market.

The device comes with a relatively large 2,900mAh battery, which should keep the device going for long intervals. The fact that the display is only 720p will ensure that the battery life is not impacted. The phone will be sold in the solitary White color variant.

Hardware specifications of the Lava Iris X10:

· 5-inch HD (1280x720) display
· 1.3 GHz quad-core processor
· 13MP rear camera
· 5MP front camera
· 3GB RAM
· 16GB storage (expandable via microSD)
· 2,900 mAh battery
· Android 5.1 Lollipop
· 4G LTE with dual SIM support

Micromax Canvas Pace 4G Q416 launched via eBay for Rs 6,821

Micromax Canvas Pace 4G Q416 launched via eBay for Rs 6,821

The budget 4G smartphone market is heating up with Lenovo, Phicomm and ZTE already in the sub-Rs 5,000 segment. Micromax has now thrown its hat in the ring with the Canvas Pace 4G, albeit with a relatively higher price tag of Rs 6,821.

The handset is only available via eBay India for now and is available freely with none of the pre-registration brouhaha. Despite featuring 4G LTE on board, the smartphone has a very sub-par hardware specs sheet, so it seems like the company has only focused on the 4G aspect of the device.

The processor used here is the low-end Snapdragon 210, so don't expect insanely great performance from the phone. Micromax is only offering the smartphone in a solitary black color option, so color choices are relatively limited for the customers.

We think a price cut would make the smartphone a very attractive offering in India. But for Rs 6,821, the Canvas Pace 4G will fail to make any sort of impact on the market, considering how there are similar (or even better) offerings available for under Rs 5,000 in the region.

Hardware specifications of the Micromax Canvas Pace 4G:

· 5-inch FWVGA (480x854) display
· 8.8mm thickness
· 1.1 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 210 processor
· 5MP rear camera
· 2MP front camera
· 1GB RAM
· 8GB storage (expandable up to 32GB)
· Android 5.1 Lollipop
· 2,500 mAh battery
· 4G LTE with dual SIM support

Nokia could be back with a full blown Android phone

Nokia could be back with a full blown Android phone

Remember Nokia? The company used to be the king of the mobile world back in an era of Nokia 3310s and Snake, but more recently the company struggled to adapt to the harsh new reality of smartphones and apps.

But it appears Nokia isn't quite down and out - as Mobile Choice UK reports that new supposed leaks suggest that the company is cooking up a new device dubbed the C1. Positioned decidedly in the mid-range category, the device is rumoured to have a 5-inch screen, full HD resolution, an Intel processor and 2GB of RAM.

So far, so ordinary. But what makes it interesting is that the new device will apparently come in versions: on that runs Windows 10 and another that runs a full version of Android.

Nokia dabbled briefly with Android ecosystem, under the then stewardship of Microsoft, when it launched the heavily forked Nokia X and Nokia XL back at MWC 2014 - but the Nokia C1 looks to be a fully fledged Android device.
Contractual wrangles

As part of the sale with Microsoft, Nokia supposedly agreed to not manufacture any new phones itself until Q4 2016 - which could be problematic, though the speculation is that Nokia could simply outsource the actual manufacturing to another company (perhaps a bit like Google does with its Nexus handsets).

Previous to this, Nokia has managed to get around this agreement by making not a phone, but a tablet. The Nokia N1 was released earlier this year and runs a customised version of Android (Nokia's Z Launcher) - and judging by the leaked images, it appears the same will be the case with the C1.

Lenovo has today announced another phone in the Vibe series with the VIBE S1. The phone was first unveiled at the IFA 2015 at Germany and it is the first smartphone in the world to come with two front cameras.

The phone is available on Amazon India and will be available in Pearl White and Midnight Blue colours. As per the company, the dual-front camera set up helps one unleash their creativity with selfies. It is priced at Rs 15,999.

Lenovo Vibe S1 comes with a 5-inch full-HD (1080x1920) display. The smartphone is powered by a 64-bit 1.7GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6752 processor along with 3GB of RAM. There is 32GB of internal storage, which can be expanded by up to 128GB via MicroSD card. The phone offers Android 5.0 Lollipop out-of-the-box and comes fitted with a 2,500mAh battery. It supports 4G LTE connectivity.

As mentioned above, the USP of this smartphone is its dual-front cameras. There is an 8 MP BSI primary front camera and a 2 MP secondary front camera analyzes depth of field information to replicate human binocular vision. These two cameras work in tandem to unleash a myriad of new possibilities that can give selfies a creative twist.

"Having witnessed a significant demand for selfie devices on Amazon.in, we are excited to offer the much-awaited Lenovo VIBE S1 to our customers across India. We see this as a great opportunity for our customers across India. We believe this is a great product that combines selfie features with design and technology," said Noor Patel, Director Category Management, Amazon India.

There is 13MP rear camera boasts a phase-detection autofocus (PDAF) camera. It is an aesthetically designed smartphone, which is 7.8mm thin profile and weighs 132 grams.

Lenovo Vibe S1: First impressions

Lenovo Vibe S1: First impressions

From the initial expressions, we have to say, Lenovo Vibe S1 is definitely a premium looking device. The smartphone has an aluminum frame, a curved glass back with a glossy finish, which seems largely inspired from the Samsung S6/S6 Edge and looks quite premium. But at the same time, is a fingerprint magnet. A Vibe branding in chrome is embossed at the centre of the glass and a 13MP rear camera with LED flash sits at the top.
The front has a 5-inch full HD display with three touch capacitive buttons at the bottom, a speaker grille at the top, light sensors and the dual front facing cameras- one 8MP primary camera and another 2MP secondary shooter.
Vibe S1 feels quite light (132g) and solid and its rounded edges makes it a comfortable to use even with one hand.

Display

Lenovo Vibe S1 boasts a 5-inch 1080p IPS display, which is protected by Gorilla Glass 3. The display is very responsive and has good brightness levels.
However, colours don’t seem punchy. We will evaluate the display performance in direct sunlight during the detailed review of the smartphone.

Cameras- the highlight

The highlight of the smartphone is its dual selfie cameras, which includes an 8MP main shooter and a 2MP secondary camera. While taking a selfie, you can turn on the dual camera mode by simply tapping on the dual camera icon on the top. After you take a selfie, you can then blur the background or cut the subject and add a different background. The DSLR-like blur effect works quite well and gives decent images with the main subject in focus; but we did not enjoy the swap/cut out feature on this. You have to make a number of attempts to get the required effect.

Besides, the 13MP rear camera is capable to take amazing shots. We were delighted to see the detailing in the pictures taken in day-light conditions. The colours look quite punchy and the camera sensor does not waste any time in locking a subject and capturing it. The low-light performance is also very good. We will talk more about the camera performance and will show the sample shots in the detailed review of the smartphone.
What’s inside?

Under the hood is a 1.7GHz octa-core 64-bit MediaTek MT6752 SoC, paired with 3GB RAM, which we found to be smooth during the little time that we spent with the handset. There were no lags in basic screen navigation, application loading and shifting from one app to another during multitasking. Lenovo Vibe S1 runs Android 5.0 with Lenovo’s custom UI running atop, which were pretty smooth.

More to know

Lenovo Vibe S1 has a 32 GB of internal storage that can be expanded by up to 128GB via microSD card. The non-removable rear panel of the smartphone hides a 2,500mAh battery unit, which seems to be a bit underpowered. We will evaluate its performance during the review of the device.
The smartphone has dual SIM 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1 and GPS as connectivity options. It is available in Pearl White and Midnight Blue colours on Amazon.in.

Upgraded YU Yuphoria spotted on a benchmark database with a decent hardware

Upgraded YU Yuphoria spotted on a benchmark database with a decent hardware

The Micromax YU Yuphoria YU6000 handset has just been spotted on benchmark database GFXBench, giving us a very good idea of the hardware that it's packing. The original Yuphoria was launched earlier this year with a budget hardware on board and the specs sheet here appears to be significantly upgraded.

According to GFXBench, the Yuphoria comes with a 4.6-inch 1080p display, compared to the 5-inch 720p display on the predecessor.

Other hardware features mentioned in the benchmark listing include 16GB of internal storage, 2GB of RAM, the octa-core Mediatek MT6753 processor and Android 5.1 Lollipop.

In the optics department, the handset is said to be sporting a 13MP rear camera and a massive 8MP front camera. It's too early to ascertain whether this is the real deal as manufacturers usually test out multiple variants of upcoming smartphones.

Much like all other YU devices before this, the Yuphoria should also be running Cyanogen OS on board, so fans can expect the best software experience out of the device.

The YU Yuphoria will probably best priced at Rs 10,000 or under given the hardware on board. The sub-Rs 10,000 segment is heavily crowded with 1080p handsets now and the addition of the new Yuphoria will make things even better (or harder) for the customers.

The OnePlus 2 can be bought in India without an invite between Nov 25-27

Although the OnePlus 2 is only available with an invite, the process has eased up a little bit since the early days of its release. But customers still require an invite to purchase the device in India, which means that not everybody will be able to get it when they want.

In order to change this, OnePlus has now announced that it will offer the flagship without an invitation starting midnight on the 25th of November until 11:59PM on November 27. So that gives you two full days to purchase the company's flagship without waiting for an invite to pop up in your mail.

Obviously, OnePlus will only have a limited amount of stocks on offer, so not everybody might be lucky enough to get their hands on the device. Customers will be able to purchase the OnePlus 2 from the company's official page at oneplus.net.

The company has also announced a Black Friday promotion for other markets which starts on the 27th of November and lasts until 30th of November.

OnePlus has mentioned that there will be some Holiday Deals on offer, which could include some of its accessories (cases, headphones etc). Further details are awaited from the company.

Hardware specifications of the OnePlus 2:

· 5.5-inch Full HD (1920x1080) display
· 9.9mm thickness
· 175 grams
· 13MP rear camera
· 5MP front camera
· Octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor
· 4GB RAM
· 64GB storage (no microSD card slot)

Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 announced with an all-metal body and a budget price tag

Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 announced with an all-metal body and a budget price tag

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 is perhaps the company's worst kept secret with leaks and rumors already giving us an excellent idea of what to expect from the device.

Well, the company has officially announced the handset today, sporting an impressive hardware specs sheet and an even better price tag. This is a policy that's worked quite well for Xiaomi in the past as we've seen with devices like the Mi 4i as well as the Redmi 2 recently in India.

For now, the Redmi Note 3 remains a China only offering although the company would be keen to bring the device to the Indian markets as well. But we're not getting our hopes up considering how the company handled the Redmi Note 2 launch a few months ago.

The Redmi Note 3 comes with a premium grade metal body all throughout and a neatly placed fingerprint scanner on the back. The company claims that the device can unlock with your fingerprint in just 0.3 seconds, which is quite spectacular for a budget device.

The device also comes with a massive 4,000 mAh battery underneath, featuring support for fast charging (0-50% in 1 hour), which tells us that Xiaomi has covered all its bases with the Redmi Note 3.

The handset will be available in Gold, Silver and Dark Grey color variants with a price tag of 899 CNY or Rs 9,300 (approx).

Hardware specifications of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3:

· 5.5-inch Full HD (1920x1080) Sunlight Display
· 8.65mm thickness
· 164 grams
· 13MP rear camera with two-tone LED flash
· 5MP front camera
· Octa-core Mediatek Helio X10 processor
· 2/3GB of RAM
· 16/32GB of internal storage

Gionee’s Marathon M5 With 6,000 mAh battery launched in India

Samsung's new Galaxy A7 looks like a great alternative to the S6

Samsung's new Galaxy A7 looks like a great alternative to the S6

Rumours of a new Samsung Galaxy A7 have been growing steadily and the spec list is looking quite impressive - a new, previously unseen version has appeared with Samsung's own processor inside.

The original Samsung Galaxy A7 offered some impressive specs in a great looking phone, while being a lot cheaper than the flagship Samsung range.

For the new Galaxy A7, previous rumours showed a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset under the hood. But the latest AnTuTu benchmarking shows an Exynos 7580 chipset.

It suggests there are set to be at least two versions of the phone - the Exynos processor features a total of eight Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.6GHz and there's going to be 3GB of RAM.
New power

Testing of the chipset suggests it's on a similar level of power as the Snapdragon 615 with an overall score of 37,563 on AnTuTu.

The rest of the specs look quite interesting as well with a 5.5-inch screen with a Full HD resolution, 16GB of storage and Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.

There's also a 13MP main camera and a 5MP front-facing camera for your selfies. A release date is currently unclear. We'll keep you posted.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 Pro leaks out in live images showing off a premium gold variant

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 Pro leaks out in live images showing off a premium gold variant

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 Pro is expected to be revealed on the 24 of November as a teaser hinted not too long ago. Well, as we lead up to the official release of the device, the handset has managed to make an appearance in a leak, giving us a very good glimpse of the sides as well as the back portion of the device.

There's not much we learn here apart from the fact that the Redmi Note 2 Pro will pack a slender exterior and the usual array of ports (SIM card tray, micro USB etc) and buttons such as power key and the standard volume rocker. Strangely, the leak doesn't show us the front portion of the handset, so that still remains a mystery.

The back has a fingerprint scanner, something which previous leaks had revealed to us well in advance. By the looks of it, we think that the Redmi Note 2 Pro could be a mid-ranger with the attributes of a flagship.

The handset could be a viable competitor to the OnePlus 2 smartphone which is currently retailing for Rs 24,999 in India. It has been said that the Redmi Note 2 Pro could be priced somewhere close to 1,099 CNY or Rs 11,400 at launch.

Rumored specifications of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 Pro:

· 5.5-inch Full HD (1920x1080) display
· 13MP rear camera
· 5MP front camera
· Octa-core Mediatek Helio X10 64-bit SoC
· 2/3GB of RAM
· 16GB of internal storage
· Android 5.1 Lollipop with MIUI

iPhone 6C release date rumour resurfaces as mid-2016

iPhone 6C release date rumour resurfaces as mid-2016

Murmurings of a second generation polycarbonate iPhone are refusing to die, with the latest rumour tipping the iPhone 6C release date for mid-2016.
This latest prediction comes from IHS analyst Kevin Wang, who took to his Weibo account to make the claim - although he did tip the iPhone 6C to arrive by the end of the year back in August, so this needs to be taken with a pinch of salt.
It's been more than two years since Apple launched the iPhone 5C, a plastic covered iPhone 5with a price tag lower than the iPhone 5S it arrived alongside - but it wasn't as cheap as many had hoped. How low can you go?
Even though Wang may not have the most glittering of track records, we're still holding out hope for the arrival of the iPhone 6C.
It's been rumoured ever since the 5C launched, and it's fair to say many questions have been raised over its potential existence since - but the same can be said for the iPad Pro.
Apple's supersized tablet was rumoured for years, almost to the point where people were starting to believe it would never happen.
But it did, and we reckon Apple is playing a similar game with the iPhone 6C. Especially because of the muted response the 5C garnered, the Cupertino firm is probably making sure its next "colourful" iteration is really worth it.

InFocus M812 and M370 to get Android 6.0 Marshmallow update next month

InFocus M812 and M370 to get Android 6.0 Marshmallow update next month

InFocus recently released the M812 and M370 smartphones in the Indian market with competitive price points. The company has now announced that it will send out the coveted Android 6.0 Marshmallow update for both the handsets starting as soon as next month.

This is an excellent initiative by the company to keep its devices updated to the latest version of Android and will go a long way in building its faith among the customers. Historically, we've seen that budget and mid-range handsets are often neglected after they are launched, but it's good to see that InFocus is an exception to that and might possibly serve as an example to other OEMs.

The M812 is slightly on the expensive side with a price tag of Rs 19,999, but the M370 is strictly a budget handset carrying a price tag of Rs 5,999. The company hasn't shared a precise timeframe of when the smartphone will receive the update, but it should happen sometime before the end of the year.

Smartphones from InFocus feature the InLife UI on top, so we can expect a revamped version of that skin coming bundled with the updates. Android 6.0 will introduce features like Android Pay, a revamped user interface as well as Doze Mode which will significantly increase the standby times of your handset.

BlackBerry Priv

BlackBerry Priv

Blackberry

VERDICT

  • The BlackBerry Priv is the mullet of the smartphone world. It's still business in the front, but now there's a party in the back too. It will divide opinion, but this is the best BlackBerry in years.

PROS:

  • Great screen
  • Stock Android
  • Added security

CONS:

  • Patchy performance
  • Pricier than competition
  • Lacks premium build quality

Well this is a turn up for the books. After almost four years of banging the BlackBerry 10 drum it seems the Canadian firm has finally admitted defeat, launching its first Android smartphone in the BlackBerry Priv.

It's not entirely a surprise - the Priv was rumored for months under the codename Venice, and a move to the Android platform makes sense.

BlackBerry 10 suffered from a serve lack of top flight applications and an interface which wasn't quite as intuitive for the general public as the now familiar Android and iOS.

That's all been addressed, with the BlackBerry Priv sporting Google's stock Android platform and with it access to the app-packed Play Store.

Coupled with an tasty sounding display, some handy BB apps and BlackBerry's legendary keyboard the Priv is finally letting the Canadian firm make some positive strides in the market. But is it all a little too late again from the firm which was left behind by the original smartphone revolution?

The BlackBerry Priv's 5.4-inch QHD display, Snapdragon 808 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage and 18MP rear camera means it stands up against the flagship competition of 2015 - thing is it's arriving around six months later.

With a SIM-free cost of £559 (US$699, around AU$975) the BlackBerry Priv certainly carries a flagship price tag - the only problem is its rivals have all dropped in price since launch, and thus are cheaper.

You can pick up a brand new Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, HTC One M9, LG G4, Nexus 6P orSony Xperia Z3+ for less than the Priv - and these are some of the best phones in the world.

The BlackBerry Priv has its work cut out then, if it's going to convince people to part with more cash and shun the established names in the Android market.

The 'Priv' name stands for Privacy, but on the box it also says Privilege - so things are already a little confusing. Luckily it's not all bad news, as BlackBerry's managed to make a surprisingly good handset.

Design

The BlackBerry Priv is a smartphone I've been genuinely excited to see, as it brings something different to the Android market and I was pretty content when it arrived in my hands.

It's been years since I had a slider phone - I loved my Nokia N95 - and the satisfying sound and action as you pop open and close the BlackBerry Priv will no doubt transport you back to the early naughties when slider phones were big business.

There's a slight metal ridge towards the bottom of the Priv, between the screen glass and front facing speaker, allowing you to get your thumb under and push the handset up to reveal the keyboard.

Push the screen two thirds of the way up the keyboard and the Priv will finish the sliding pop action for you. I found myself idly playing with the slider throughout the day - there's something comforting about flicking the Priv open and closed.

Satisfying slide aside, the BlackBerry Priv isn't exactly small - nor is it lightweight. At 147 x 77.2 x 9.4mm the Priv is sizable in the hand, but not completely dominating.

I was able to hold it one handed and perform basic tasks, but for intensive periods of writing you'll want to hold on with both mitts. Especially when you consider the Priv tips the scales at 192g.

Flip the phone up to reveal the keyboard and the height grows to 184mm, which feels very top heavy when you're tapping away on the keys - but more on that in the next section.

BlackBerry has followed in Samsung's footsteps when it comes to the screen, as the Priv sports dual-curved sides just like the Galaxy S6 Edge and S6 Edge+. The edges aren't quite as pronounced as Samsung's implementation, but it still generates an eye catching effect which draws the eye in.

The glass front surrounded by the metal rim, which is raised at the top and bottom to protect it when it's face down, makes the Priv appear suitably premium. Pick it up though and the illusion is somewhat shattered.

BlackBerry has clad the back and sides of the Priv in what it calls a tensile weave, which basically means it's not metal or glass, but what feels like plastic.

It's the same finish as found on the Q10 and Z30, and while it does have a nicer finish than the plastic Samsung used to insist on splashing on its flagships it's certainly no match for the elegance of the iPhone 6S, One M9 or Galaxy S6.

The plus side here is the material is extremely grippy and the rounded edges of the BlackBerry Priv means it can be held securely in hand.

I found the plastic covering to be a little creaky in places too, and applying just a small amount of pressure on the side below the power/lock key generated a squeaking noise from the handset.

That doesn't scream high level of craftsmanship, but my review handset was one of the very first Priv handsets off the production line so hopefully this will be addressed in later batches.

The rear of the Priv is dominated by a sizable, protruding Schneider-Kreuznach camera sensor, with a dual-led flash to its side. These, plus the iconic BlackBerry logo, are the only features on the flat rear of the handset.

On top you'll find trays for the nanoSIM and microSD card, while on the base a centralized microUSB port resides next to a headphone jack.

All in all, the BlackBerry Priv is a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to design - I love the slider action and the dual-curved display, but it's let down by a weighty construction and creaky plastic.

Asus ZenPad S 8.0

Asus

VERDICT
The Asus ZenPad S 8.0 packs great specs and well-rounded features into an attractive tablet that won't break the bank, and which competes strongly with more expensive competitors.

PROS:
Low price
Superb high-res screen
Stereo speakers

CONS:
A lot of pre-installed apps
Flimsy microSD socket cover
Average camera
Asus brought one of the first Android Honeycomb 3.0 tablets to the market in 2011 in the form of the EeePad Transformer, and has been plugging away at the tablet scene ever since in an effort to create the fabled 'iPad killer' so many Android-lovers are looking for.

While the company has continued to impress, with some serious improvements in its Transformer line of tablets, few tablets other than the Google-branded original Nexus 7 have managed to sell in significant numbers.

Asus has the Apple iPad Mini 4 firmly in its sights with its latest attempt, the ZenPad S 8.0, which carries a low price tag of £169.99 ($199 or AU$279) - that's almost half the price of the cheapest 7.9-inch tablet from Apple.

Compared with the Asus MeMO Pad 7, which we reviewed earlier this year, the ZenPad S 8.0 has a higher-resolution 2048 x 1536 IPS screen, which with 324ppi is both incredibly sharp and has iPad-rivalling viewing angles and colour. As with the MemoPad Asus is sticking with the quad-core, 64-bit Intel Atom Z3560 running at 1.83 gigahertz, coupled with 2GB of RAM.

There are plenty of other extras worth mentioning, such as the dual front-facing speakers with Dolby DTS-HD technology, and 32GB of storage space that can be increased by a further 128GB via a microSD card slot.

The ZenPad S 8.0 is also one of the first tablets to include a USB Type-C connector rather than micro USB, which enables faster transfers and quicker charging, and is reversible, like Apple's lightening connector.
Design

The ZenPad S 8.0 measures just 203.2 x 134.5 mm and is light enough to comfortably hold in one hand; at just 6.6mm thick it feels super-thin and well balanced. The 76.5% screen-to-body ratio is far from the worst you'll find, and is enough to give most videos the full-screen cinematic treatment.

Up front the design offers little to distinguish it from the tablet pack beyond the dual front-facing speakers. A chrome bezel separates the third-generation Gorilla Glass from the plastic chassis, while on the rear a second chrome bezel splits the soft plastic from a leather-effect portion that affords a little extra grip (depending how you hold it).

On the right edge you'll find a nondescript volume bar and power/wake button, which while far from stylish are at least raised enough to make them easy to blindly locate. There's a 3.5mm headphone jack on the top left, and the USB-C socket and a microphone on the bottom.

The left edge is home to the microSD card slot, which is hidden under a little flap. Although the cover does sit flush with the casing and protects the slot from dust, it's not exactly the sturdiest example of its type , and it feels like it could be rather easily snapped off.

As for cameras, there's a rear-facing 8MP unit and a 5MP front-facing shooter for selfies and video calling. Neither is accompanied by a flash, although if you're serious about taking a high-quality snap it's unlikely that you'll be resorting to a tablet to do so.
Interface and features

While the Nexus 7 may have been a totally stock Android experience, Asus has since moved onto its own ZenUI launcher, which in this case is based on Android Lollipop 5.0. While other launchers do nothing to improve the Android interface ZenUI does very little harm, and in some cases is an improvement.

For starters, the skin is highly customisable, and is a little more intelligent than Google's stock experience when it comes to things such as sorting newly installed apps. After installation, ZenUI will automatically sort an app into a number of pre-made 'Smart' folders, or in some cases will make a new folder, as was the case when I installed a couple of games.

Asus has been careful not to drastically overhaul some of the best parts of Android, simply putting its own spin on well-rounded existing features such as the pull-down notifications and quick-settings pane, and the multi-tasking apps menu.

The lock screen serves up useful information such as the weather, location and any notifications you might have pending, as well as quick access to apps such as the camera, email and web browser, all of which can be launched with a quick tap and a swipe.

It's a handy feature that's found in many third-party launchers, but like the rest, it quickly disappears into the background if you turn on the PIN or pattern lock screen security options.

With abundant customisations through ZenUI, it's no surprise that even the app drawer has had every conceivable option thrown in for good measure. You can change the grid size, lock and hide apps, and much more besides.

In fact, you can tweak ZenUI to look exactly as you wish (although none of these extras get in the way of usability). You can leave the ZenPad S 8.0 exactly as it comes out of the box if you prefer, but those who like to adjust background transparency, icons, icon label colours and default system fonts will find these options, and lots more, in the app drawer's preferences menu.

Xiaomi Mi Protect plan officially released in India for a handful of devices

Xiaomi Mi Protect plan officially released in India for a handful of devices

Xiaomi has just announced its accidental damage protection plan for its devices, priced at Rs 275 and Rs 499 depending on the device. The coverage applies to the Mi 4, Mi 4i, Mi Pad tablet, the Redmi 2 as well as the Redmi 2 Prime.

As we reported last week, the Mi Protect plan will cover accidental damages including water related as well as standard drops, thus practically covering all sorts of damages that one would encounter in a smartphone's lifetime. Also included is a SIM misuse coverage of up to Rs 3,000.

In case of device theft, the customers can remotely lock the SIM card with one phone call to the Xiaomi customer support team. For Rs 275 you can get coverage for the Redmi 2 and the Redmi 2 Prime. But if you own devices like the Mi 4, Mi 4i and the Mi Pad tablet, you will have to shell out Rs 499.

Since all the devices are technically under warranty, you can get Mi Protect for all the aforementioned devices. The Mi Protect coverage is only applicable for devices bought from mi.com though, so this won't apply you got your device from Amazon or Flipkart.

This is an excellent idea from Xiaomi and offers users the luxury of using their smartphones without fear of paying too much for accidental damages. Once you have registered a complaint with Xiaomi, the representatives will come over to your doorsteps and ascertain if it qualifies for a repair or a replacement.

Samsung's Galaxy S7 may take the Xperia Z5's best feature

Samsung's Galaxy S7 may take the Xperia Z5's best feature

Samsung is known to be working on a new 20MP ISOCELL sensor for the Galaxy S7, but the company has expressed an interest in Sony's new camera on the Xperia Z5 series.

Reports suggest Samsung is so impressed by the IMX300 sensor within the Xperia Z5 that it wants to include that in the Galaxy S7 camera as well.

Allegedly it won't ditch the ISOCELL, though. It may include different sensors in different regions and models of the phone, much like the processor set up on previous Galaxy handsets.
If you can't beat 'em...

Sony wants to keep that sensor exclusively for its Xperia range, but the company also sees how many phones Samsung sells. Having a sensor in each of those phones would be a great boost to Sony's camera business.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 features a 16MP sensor while the Sony Xperia Z5 series features a 23MP version.

According to the rumour, the new 20MP ISOCELL that Samsung is working on includes a new RWB colour pattern. It enhances light within the camera and should create some even better low-light shots than the Galaxy S6.

Asus ZenWatch vs ZenWatch 2: which is right for you?

Asus ZenWatch vs ZenWatch 2: which is right for you?

Asus Zenwatch vs Zenwatch 2

Asus has introduced the successor to the ZenWatch, a smartwatch that was originally praised for its Apple Watch-esque design as well as its status as one of the better Android Wear watches out there.

This came as a surprise since Asus is a popular computer-focused company that has largely failed to make a real dent in the mobile industry.

Because of the praise of the original device, the new ZenWatch 2 has a lot to live up to. But is it able to stand up against the original? We put the two devices head-to-head to find out.
Design

One of the main selling points of the original ZenWatch was its design, so it makes sense that Asus would want to keep the form similar when creating its successor.

Still, the design of the ZenWatch 2 is slightly more refined than the original ZenWatch. One of the big visual differences is the addition of a small metal crown that can be used to interact with the device.

Much more customization is also available: the ZenWatch 2 comes in three different color options, including rose gold, gunmetal and standard silver. There are also more band options available now.

Asus has introduced two different sizes of the ZenWatch 2. The smaller version of the device has a model number of WI502Q and has dimensions of 45.2mm (1.78 inches) x 37.2mm (1.46 inches) and a thickness of 10.4mm (0.41 inches). The larger device is the WI501Q, and is 49.6mm (1.95 inches) x 40.7mm (1.6 inches). The thickness, however, is smaller, at 9.4mm (0.37 inches). This is likely because there is more room under the hood for internal components.

The original ZenWatch had dimensions of 51mm (2.0 inches) x 39.9mm (1.57 inches), however the thickness was slimmer than both of the newer devices, sitting at 7.9mm (0.31 inches).

Apart from body dimensions, Asus also changed the size of the watch band. Both versions of the ZenWatch 2 feature a band width of 22mm (0.87 inches), while the older ZenWatch's band was 39.8mm (1.57 inches) across.
Display

Both the larger ZenWatch 2 and the original ZenWatch feature a 1.63-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 320 x 320 pixels and a pixel density of 278ppi.

The smaller ZenWatch 2, however, has an appropriately smaller display at 1.45-inches, a resolution of 280 x 280 pixels and a density of 273ppi. The pixel density of the smaller display is minimally smaller, however the physical size of the display is noticeable.
Processor, RAM and Storage

Interestingly enough, Asus hasn't really made many changes under the hood the second time around. Every ZenWatch model comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 1.2Ghz processor and all feature 512MB of RAM and 4GB of on-board storage.

This is somewhat surprising, especially considering the devices were released around a year apart. Clearly Asus' mentality for the device is, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." The only fear that one could have is that the new device might go out of date quicker than the previous generation, however only time will tell whether that plays out or not.
Fitness tracking

One of the things that's changed between the two generations of devices are the sensors on offer for fitness tracking. The original ZenWatch featured a nine-axis sensor/bio-sensor, which can track metrics like steps taken, calories burned and heart rate.

Both ZenWatch 2 models feature a six-axis sensor, including an accelerometer and gyroscope, along with a sensor-hub, which basically helps process the information captured from the sensor. While comparing six to nine might make the new device seem a little less impressive, the new ZenWatch 2 can still track the same metrics. Not only that, but the Wellness app has been redesigned for the new watch, and, at least according to Asus, helps make the new watch a "fully-featured activity tracker."

The new device is also able to handle water and dust a lot better than its predecessor. While the original device had an IP55 rating, meaning it can handle a few splashes, the new watch has an IP67 rating, indicating it can be fully submerged in up to a meter of water for up to 30 minutes. You still shouldn't go swimming or shower with it on as the rating refers to accidental submersion.
Battery life

Asus has upped the battery life on the ZenWatch for the new larger model, which offers a 400mAh battery, compared to the 369mAh battery of its predecessor. The smaller ZenWatch 2, however, features a lower capacity 300mAh battery.

Asus claims the the larger ZenWatch 2 will last for two days on a single charge and the smaller version a day and a half. The older device only lasts one day on a single charge. Basically, Asus has managed to bring its ZenWatch in line with other wearables on the market, which is great news for those who don't want to have to charge their device every day.
Software and compatibility

The new ZenWatch 2 runs the latest version of Android Wear out of the box, which has a number of big updates. Of course, the older ZenWatch has received this latest version of Android Wear as an update as well, so really there aren't many differences as far as software goes between the two devices.

Asus did add a number of tweaks to the software on the ZenWatch 2. For example, a feature called Remote Camera enables users to see through the camera lens on their smartphone. This feature did exist on the original ZenWatch, however it has been upgraded in the new device to offer further reach and faster performance.

Another improvement is in the wellness smartphone app, as discussed earlier.

There should be no difference in compatibility between the two devices, especially with recent updates to Android Wear. The two devices will work with Android smartphones running 4.3 and later, and iPhones running iOS 8.2 and later.
Price

Here's where things get a little confusing with price, at least if you choose to buy from the Asus website. The original ZenWatch costs $149 (£149/about AU$207). The new, larger ZenWatch 2 actually costs less than the original, starting at $129 (about £84.2/AU$179) for the model with a brown leather band.

For a metal band, users will be paying $199 (about £130/AU$277), however it's not on sale just yet.

The smaller ZenWatch 2 costs more than the larger device, matching the price of the previous version and starts at $149 (about £97/AU$207). Like the larger ZenWatch 2, prices range up to $199 (about £130/AU$277).
Conclusions

This really is a no-brainer, especially considering the price. The ZenWatch 2 is a better device, even though it's only marginally so. There's no reason to buy the original ZenWatch. Add in the fact that it has a slightly more refined design, better battery life, better fitness tracking and more features overall, and the Asus ZenWatch 2 is a steal.
